The "I" currently plays a prominent role in media art - for artists but also for viewers. They are increasingly challenged to dive into fictional worlds and to expand the boundaries of their own body and consciousness or to experience their own perspective and physicality in relation to art. The "I" is once again at stake, because the technological penetration of the body makes its boundaries porous. Artists share their experiences, question their identity, address their relationship to the art operating system as authors, or explore individual and collective gestures of resistance and forms of self-organisation. This year, the EMAF combines these aspects under the title FIRST PERSON PLURAL.
In its exhibition, thematic film programme and talks, the festival examines how our ideas of the "I" are changing under the influence of digital media and the social and economic conditions of late modernity. It asks: Who or what can actually say "I", make themselves heard and assert themselves? How much "we" does the "I" contain? And how much "I" can "we" still allow ourselves today?
